On September 9, Sarah hosted a Master Class with industry friends @Annette_Updo_Artist and @hairandmakeupbysteph at Mia Wagner salon in NYC!

Old Hollywood Waves

  1. Start by creating a deep side part. I like to draw a line back from the arch of the eyebrow.

  2. Blow-dry with a round brush, overdirecting to create volume.

  3. Working in horizontal sections from bottom to top, tease at the root with a comb, and spray with a strong hold hairspray where you clip in the extension for extra grip. Pro tip: only tease hair inward to the root; when teasing back and forth, you are more likely to damage the hair

  4. Cut extensions to blend with the client’s cut by creating blunt layers to add depth.

  5. Spray The Beachwaver Co. Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray all over.

  6. Using a Beachwaver S1, start in the bottom section, and secure 1-inch sections of hair near the end of the clamp.

  7. Holding the Beachwaver in a horizontal position, press the arrow button to rotate each section under.

  8. Hold for a few seconds, open the clamp, and slide the section straight out into your hand. Then, use 2-inch duckbill clips to secure each curl at the base.

  9. Repeat section by section, from bottom to top.

  10. Allow curls to fully cool before removing duckbill clips.

  11. Spray an On Set Pro Brush with Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray, then brush through the curls. Pro tip: take large sections of hair, and hold them as if you’re creating a ponytail, then brush through. Continue to apply plenty of hairspray to the brush to evenly distribute the product.

  12. Tuck the non-dominant side behind the ear, and apply a tissue, securing with a duckbill clip.

  13. On the other side, apply a tissue and secure with 3 duckbill clips to shape the curl.

  14. Allow to cool, then remove the tissue and clips.

  15. Finish with a styling cream on the ends of the hair to smooth flyaways.

Mixed Braid: Five-Strand Braid, Boxed Fishtail, Three-Strand Braid + Beachwaver Hair Cuff in Gold

  1. Start by applying Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray all over.

  2. Use a Coast Pro Ceramic Styling Iron to smooth the root area, then apply Braid Balm Pre-Braid Prep to the roots.

  3. Spray an On Set Pro Brush with hairspray, and, with your head tilted upward, brush hair into a ponytail.

  4. Use a hook elastic to secure ponytail, then add a Beachwaver Hair Cuff in Gold.

  5. At the top of the pony, use four fingers to separate hair into five sections, and create a five-strand braid (bring the left-most section under then over, then the right-most section under and over.) Braid for a third of the ponytail length, then secure with a clear elastic. Take a small section of hair from underneath, wrap around the elastic to conceal, and secure with a bobby pin.

  6. In the section below, create a boxed fishtail braid. Split the hair into two sections, then take a piece from the right, split it in half, and cross one piece over and add it to the other side, then cross one piece under and add it to the other side. Braid for the next third of hair.

  7. Again, secure with a clear elastic, wrap with hair from underneath to conceal, and bobby pin in place.

  8. In the last section, create a regular three-strand brand. Braid until the end of the hair, secure with a clear elastic, and conceal with a section of hair. Then bobby pin up into the braid.

  9. Apply Color Wow Root Cover Up to fill in the hairline.

  10. Finish with Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray for hold and shine. Pro tip: roll the can over hair to smooth flyaways!
